Pick Up The Snake – Feel The Fire (Self-Release)

 The EP narrowly escaped being thrown in the trash on first glance because of my “if the band name is more than three words it’s shitty metalcore” rule. A textbook study in the danger of rash generalizations made even worse because I recalled the band name from a MySpace friend request. Say what you will about the MySpace sickness – if you can get beyond the rampant “am I hot or not” narcissism, you can find yourself some good music you otherwise might not. Anway…
Pick Up The Snake are not metalcore in the least, more “Beardcore” in my book because band members that generally indulge in this heavy, groove-oriented type of whiskey-metal,usually sport unkept beards of varying lengths and look like members of Crowbar. Aside from a few caveats, this is a more-than-decent intro into the moonshine metal market, sounding like a cross between COC and Alabama Thunderpussy. This type of Heaviness is dominated by the Riff, and there is plenty to go ‘round and then some. My problem is that some of the lyrics – especially on “Slide The Horn” and “Salvation” – are kinda hackneyed and… well, sort of retarded. But I could say that for the whole genre on further thought. Bobby Dylan or Neil Young they're not, but I guess it’s really not the point when you plug in and mash the shit out of your distortion pedal.
In summary – solid debut, a little weak in the lyrical department, but with riffs like this all is forgiven.

Call me retarded if you must. But I've been quite rocking this band lately, and from thier myspace page no less. Not the best vocals in the world but just the whiskey soaked swaggery distorted to hell guitar tone I can't get enough of.

pick up the snake rules
I know the singer of the snake and he didnt write that crap!
nathan saw this and posted it on his myspace page cause he thought it was funny.love or hate them they rock.lets all grow beards and worship the devil.
