Interviews - Goat Horn

I’ve been a big Goat Horn fan since their 2001 storming beer n’ bullet belt debut, “Voyage to Nowhere” and it’s been a pleasure to see the band steadily progress both musically and in overall popularity. They’ve recently played BW&BK 6 Pack Weekend III and the Classic Metal Fest and seem to instill the classic ‘get in the van’ attitude when it comes to playing shows. Any gains in merch sales and recognition have been hard won the old fashioned way – no whining, no crying, just get out and play! Goat Horn vocalist and bass-wielder Jason Decay discusses the band’s new EP, their steady climb in popularity and what’s next for the band.
Hellride Music: Well, it's been a couple of years since we last checked in with you guys and it seems like things are going well - you've got a new EP out and you guys seem to be playing all over the place. Give us an update, how's everything going and how's it changed from two years ago?
Jason Decay: We're pretty much the same, still slugging away at our heavy Metal and trying to pound out a living. One thing I've noticed is that we get recognized quite a bit now. People like to shout "Goat Horn" when we're walking down the street. Even people that aren't even to familiar with the band will be like "hey, aren't you in that band?... my friend loves you guys." Oh, and we also got to play some really awesome shows over the last couple years and we've sold a lot more CD's.
Hellride Music: Cool. I fogot to ask if you’re getting laid more, but that’s really none of my business, is it? You've got a new EP out called Threatning Force that is phenomenal old school beer n' bullet belt Heavy Metal. Tell us about the EP... how does it differ from your last epic Storming the Gates? Seems to me that it's a little less dark and a more straightforward Heavy Metal... how do you guys view it?
Jason: The EP is basically a demo snipit of the next album. It was the first 3 songs we had ready to record, so we recorded them to tie shit over. The songs on the new EP are more about our lifestyle, but do not fully represent the entire next album. I think the next album will be more like Gates…, except higher production and improved musicianship.
Hellride Music: What was the reason you guys decided to release this on your own?
Jason: It was recorded as a demo, but we released it to feed the hunger and demand and make some quick money. It will be deleted once the next album comes out.
Hellride Music: I'm a big fan of the artwork on the last two albums... whose the artist?
Jason: A girl from our hometown of Pembroke named Rebecca Buchanan did the Voyage to Nowhere and Gates… cover paintings, Emmett Hall from Vancouver did the Threatening Force cover, he's an animator for the Atomic Betty cartoon.
Hellride Music: You guys seem to be more mobile this year with a lot of higher profile dates mixed in with the regular club dates... There's BW&BK 6 Pack Weekend III and the Classic Metal Fest for starters... how's the live thing going? Do all you guys like to tour or is it a "have to" thing?
Jason: Both. We like to tour and we have to. We're a live band and that's the only way we're going to make it and it is going very well live. We basically shove it down everyone's throat live, so they don't really have a chance to hate us. We partied hard at the BW&BK and Classic Metal Fests.
Hellride Music: Tell me this - how do three guys manage to get the same amount of time off to tour, then actually keep from killing each other WHILE you're touring? How bands do that crap is beyond me. Metallica had the right idea by toting along a therapist wherever they went.
Jason: We all keep shitty jobs, therefore its easy to get time off. If they didn't give us time off then we'd quit. Our band is the most important thing to us and nothing is going to get in our way. Oh yeah, we also bring a therapist along...
Hellride Music: You're getting some great live reviews from what I've been reading, congrats on that. What's been your best show and why? Anything crazy happen on tour yet?
Jason: Oh, plenty of crazy shit happens on tour, especially if you go out with Rammer. There's two ways to judge a live show. One is performance and the other is how we connect with the crowd. I usually judge by how we connect with the crowd. Lots of crazy shit has happened, but since you asked I am only drawing blanks.
Hellride Music: As long as you're not shootin' 'em, that's OK. What's next for Goat Horn?
Jason: Getting the fuck on tour ASAP and recording the next album by this fall.
Hellride Music: Thanks for the interview - last words?
Jason: You are welcome, thanks for your continued support of this one and only band. F.R.O.!!!!!!!!!!!!! Metal will knock you down, slut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
