  Interviews - Unearthly Trance

Unearthly Trance is a thinking man’s band. Not just heavy (which it most definitely is) but it displays raw violence, contrition and dread shrouded in sonic atmosphere composed of disquisitive mysticism. UT is music to be experienced and not just listened to. Hellride talks with guitarist/vocalist Ryan Lipynsky about the UT sound, Ryan’s Thralldom project, their upcoming tour and the Occult. Not to be missed.

Hellride Music: Unearthly Trance sounds like no other. Seriously, you guys made your own category. Part atmospheric tinderbox, part disconsolate doom, part occult mysticism. I don't know what to call you... what do you guys call you or does that kind of stuff matter?

Ryan Lipynsky: I think you nailed it on the head. On the surface it’s just an ugly eerie thing. But when you sit with the lyrics and the album art we are certainly trying to convey 'feeling' and 'color'. Doom is a very limited genre that borders on 'tribute' metal. That is not what UT is about. Yes, I own all those old killer doom records so why would I make a record that sounds just like it? I definitely have a burning desire to create important, challenging musick. We are attempting to expand our sound with every chance we get. To answer your question, I call it 'unearthly trance'. Just like you can only call Neurosis, Neurosis!

Hellride Music: Gotcha, well put. Let me try this in a different light… a guy that never heard you was going to a U.T. show and asked you to describe UT's sound, what would you say?

Ryan: Well, our live gigs are a whole different thing. Depending on the mood of the crowd or the feel of the venue, we will design our set-list. Sometimes we are beer-swilling brutal metal band… and others we are this distant, constant atomic vibe. But the two of those things ('rock/metal' and 'noise art') combined together creates a forces of ebb and flow.. This is our trance.. We draw you in with something familiar and burn you out with something extreme.

Hellride Music: Speaking of UT shows, you guys are going on tour soon, I think with U.K. bludgeon-core heavyweights Ramessesesssesses. Where does the tour take you and how do you feel about your touring partners? What kind of blood shall be spilt and in what quantity?

Ryan: We are touring in late May in the UK mostly, but a few other shows in Belgium and Holland. I think its long overdue for us to go over there, being that we are band that is on the UK label Rise Above. Since we previously toured with Mark and Tim on the UT/EWIZ US tour… and were people we got along with,, we thought it would be a cool idea to meet up again for some more chaos and carnage. I’ve yet to really experience Ramesses 'alive' but expect heavy things. I suspect the smoking will be on max as well as the drunks.. well at least UT haha… especially Darren.. watch out for that guy.. he drinks all night long.

Hellride Music: UT now has a couple of DIY CD-Rs, a couple of 7"s, some comp tracks and two full lengths behind you, all equally mind blowing. How do you feel about your past material and most importantly, how do you keep from becoming a one-trick pony? Is it a constant push to progress and grow the UT sound or do you guys even think about that? How do you keep challenging yourselves?

Ryan: Our past material is great in my eyes. Right out of the gate and a brand new band, I feel we had something to offer. Some of the older demos productions and performances make me cringe these days but overall we always had good songs going for us. To be totally honest, the way we won’t become a one trick pony is by changing. We have three new songs written "In-self/Infinite", "Living Yourself To Kill" and "Her Cadaver"..They all focus on a more concise and faster UT. Less plodding and more stabbing. Challenges and lack of satisfaction makes my creativity flourish.

Hellride Music: Good answer. Let's talk about the occult leanings of UT lyrics - Is it the real deal? In other words, are you a student of the occult or is it just something to write about? If you're a student, what school of thought do you follow and why?

Ryan: I am certainly a student of the occult. But I do not subscribe to one school of thought. That is the point really. Musick represents absolute freedom and when you factor in the numbers and scales interacting with the emotions of the instruments and vocals. It’s a very personal occult experience. The ceremony of it all. Why follow someone who wrote a book about an amazing individual when you can strive to be something vital and real? I will only suggest that every one discover their ‘Will’ and then fucking build an empire on that foundation of true inner purpose. Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of the Law. I read lots of books and absorb everything through the ‘third eye’ these days. The magick is real I tell you.

Hellride Music: This interests me, because I’ve always been equally fascinated by the occult as I have been scared shitless. Bottom line, should you fuck with the occult and the unknown if you have no experience in such things?

Ryan: :The only way you will fuck with it is if you have been drawn to it your whole life. I can remember reading about Satanism at a very early age. I used to believe when I was younger that I was a Knight’s Templar. Very odd. I chased these pre-birth memories and uncovered endless synchronicities. Living and breathing is the only way to experience the occult. Its right under all of our noses.

Hellride Music: Let's switch gears a bit and talk about your Thralldom project. What can you tell us about it? Whose involved and how does Thralldom differ from UT?

Ryan: Thralldom consists of myself and drummer jaldagar. I use another name (killusion) and it is very much under the radar. Noisy Obscure Occult Evil Black Metal for the new aeon. ..experimental and raw. We have had a new 7” (The 7 Heads of The Lion-Serpent) and CD/LP (Black Sun Resistance) just come out.

Hellride Music: Tell us about the Red Room. Demystify it for us. Seriously, when you guys record, do you make the atmosphere to suit the music?

Ryan: The Red Room is where Jaldagar and myself have recorded every single thralldom song since 1997. The whole studio is painted Red and creates fire! Thralldom records way out in the woods on the east end of Long Island.

Hellride Music: Thanks for the interview and good luck on tour. Where can we get updates and do you have any last words for us?

Ryan: Cheers!
