Bass? Who needs a bass?? Featuring members who’ve played with such notable alums in the world of Heaviness as Cavity, -16- and Gammera, Black Cobra have single-handedly defined just how crushing guitar, vocals and percussion can be. As a two-piece, they’ve recorded their impressive debut EP – a dark, dark stew of foreboding sludge, acid doom and thinking-man’s metal. Guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian talks to Hellride’s Chris Barnes.
Hellride Music: Let's start from the beginning - we know that Black Cobra is you, Jason Landrian and that you were the guitarist for Cavity. What else do we need to know about the roots of Black Cobra?
Jason Landrian Black Cobra is Jason Landrian on guitar and vocals and Rafael Martinez on drums. Rafael played bass in -16-, guitar in Gammera and Secret Order of Tusk, and is currently filling in on bass for Acid King. We formed in 2002, shortly after the demise of Cavity, and began working on material.
Hellride Music: Last I heard, you guys were a two piece - is that still the case?
Jason: Yes, we are a two piece and it will remain that way forever.
Hellride Music: Your debut CD EP is a definite keeper... it's a weird mix of sludge, doom and maybe some hardcore in there too. How do you describe the Black Cobra sound?
Jason: Loud and heavy. We didn't really plan on sounding any particular way besides that. Those were our only intentions from the get-go.
Hellride Music: "Silverblack" slays - not that the rest of the EP doesn't, but that especially is soul sucking... tell us about the tune both from a lyrical and musical standpoint.
Jason: Lyrical meaning is between minimal to none in most of the songs. This one in particular concerns technology and its potential for disaster on humanity. From a musical standpoint, all of the songs are us playing what we feel we want to hear and doing our best to move forward in new directions.
Hellride Music: The vox on the EP are killer - it sounds like they were recorded in the middle of a deep pit - who did the production job on this? How long did it take to record anyway? What do you think of the final result?
Jason: We recorded/produced/released the EP ourselves. It was Rafael behind the mixing board, and then both of us giving input on the overall sound. We recorded in his studio in Los Angeles, and the whole process took 3 days. The vocals were the toughest thing to nail down. Originally we both did vocal tracks, but then liked it better with just the one (although a second vocal track is still buried deep in the mix). We're pleased with the final result.
Hellride Music: I know everyone asks the influences question.... but I gotta. Who do you guys count among your influences?
Jason: Our work in -16- and Cavity has definitely been an influence. Not just from a musical standpoint, but also from an experiential level. Both bands always did things their own way and that kind of left its mark on both of us. Other bands that have had an influence on us are Black Flag, The Misfits, Slayer, The Jesus Lizard, and Free.
Hellride Music: It seems like Black Cobra has been out playing shows lately - how is that working out? What's the crowd response been like?
Jason: We just played a show in Miami with Torche and Municipal Waste. The crowd really liked it. We're in the midst of planning a tour for the spring. Hopefully that will go just as well.
Hellride Music: Do you see this band as being your permanent project going forward? What's in the future for the band?
Jason: Yes, this is definitely a full-time thing. The future of the band includes recording and releasing a full-length, as well as touring everywhere.
Hellride Music: Your website is killer - who designed that thing? I mean, it's a little tough to navigate but the look is foreboding as hell....
Jason: I designed and maintain the website with input from Rafael. It's really just more of us being as self-sufficient as possible. Yeah, it's a little tough to navigate, but our main goal for the site was just to make something really genuine and different from what we've seen.
Hellride Music: Thanks for the interview - any shout outs, props or what ups before we leave you?
Jason: A lot of people have been really helpful along the way. I would hate to forget any of them. Thanks to all our friends and families for their support.
