  Interviews - Dove

The grass doesn’t grow under Henry Wilson’s feet. Over the last ten years he’s recorded and toured with Miami sludge godfathers Cavity during their Supercollider era, and manned the engine room for Floor, all the while working on Dove, a band Henry fronts. Now, with the break up of Floor, Henry has channeled his energies towards one end: Dove. 2004 saw the band break major ground with the release of their fantastic self-titled record, a piece of music that nods towards convention then goes off in a million new and inspired directions (including…gasp…melody), as well as touring across the United States. I checked in with Henry to see what fuels his seemingly endless passion for creating heavy music.

Hellride Music: I had a chance to see Dove at Emissions in May, and the self-titled record is fantastic – what have you guys been up to since then?

Henry Wilson Just being friends and jamming, working on new ideas and staying happy. On the search for one love and universal sound. Not rushing the inspiration just letting things happen, we did a lot over the summer and some periodic shows here and there, we have lazy determination that will see us through.

Hellride Music: What happened with Floor? The self-titled Floor album is one of my favourites of the last few years and you guys seemed to be really gaining popularity.

Henry: We had a real rough summer in 2003, line-up changes and personal loss kind of took the vibe away from us I think. No details…just a real intense time in all of our lives. Steve and I tried to give it another go but I felt it wasn’t for me anymore, I like the idea that the self-titled is our last statement.

Hellride Music: Along with Floor and Dove, you also did the Supercollider record with Cavity. Florida has produced some truly heavy, interesting bands. I was wondering if you could describe the Florida scene as you experienced it and maybe some of the other great bands that didn’t get beyond regional exposure.

Henry: I live outside of Tampa, so death metal was everywhere, I was into hardcore and punk rock, not really metal but in Tampa the lines blurred here and there especially in the early 90's. I used to see Assuck everytime they played Tampa, the heaviest band on the scene was Scrog they have a few rare 7 inches out, one on Allied Records that you could probably still find. The heavier bands at the time seemed more into art aesthetics than say the classic southern rock vibe that seems to run things today. A lot of straight edge kids who dug the Melvins, kind of weird but at one point Tampa really had a heavy thing going, different than most places, most were more metal in sound and delivery but also touching on Joy Division territory giving a lot of goth kids a heavy scene they felt comfortable in.

Hellride Music: Speaking of scenes, what the hell’s up with Arkansas? Rwake, Deadbird, Garfight, Shitfire…I know you did some dates with Rwake this past year…they’re one of my favourite bands and I wondered what that experience was like.

Henry:
I love Rwake, those are my boys...They live that shit, the real deal Holyfield. We just played with Deadbird in New Orleans, I know Chuck from touring with him while he was in Rwake and Phillip the drummer came along with them so I've known them for a few years. I thought they were great, they have a finesse that I gravitate towards. I’m really looking forward to their growth as a band. Touring with Rwake is awesome. I feel that I have some real brothers and sisters in Arkansas.

Hellride Music: Dove has released stuff sporadically over the years, on 7”s and comps like South of Heaven. Has the band always been active in some form? Can you provide some history?

Henry: History... the band was never completely inactive, we went through periods where we were not doing much though. Mostly because of my touring with Floor, the band was always doing things but I don’t think we really hit our vibe until the last year and a half. Revelations... it just seems to be happening for us now. I like all the material but I feel that we’re different people now... for the better, and I believe that our music is greatly affected by this. History - John and I have been playing together since summer of 2000, had a few bass players now Joshua is at the control.

Hellride Music: I know you’ve got eclectic taste in music – any notions for doing something radically different at some point?

Henry: Yeah, I could easily see being in a reggae band or recording maybe dance music or something, writing beats and melodies. I want my own recording setup, maybe sometime this year. I always see playing guitar in something though.

Hellride Music: What plans do you have for Dove in 2005?

Henry: To enjoy our ride, and hopefully get what we got going on to record. See places, and rock with the people. The last year has been amazing and here we are again, I look forward to doing it all again and then some.
Hellride Music: When we spoke in 2002, the last five records you’d listened to were: Robin Trower, Guided by Voices, Rush, 7-Seconds and Hawkwind. How about now?

Henry: Inner Circle, Augustus Pablo, Dr.Alimintado, Judy Mowatt, and Caress of Steel by..... RUSH.

Hellride Music: Being a Rush fan and all, will you play Toronto some day, and if so, which Rush song would you cover (if you had to)?

Henry: We were just speaking tonight of playing Canada, so maybe...We've been jamming “Xanadu”, its hard as fuck, I would love to do “Jacob’s Ladder”, but as far as the skill to actually play a Rush song, probably something off of Fly by Night we could do.

Hellride: In closing, what were some of the best albums you heard this year?

Henry: A ton of reggae turned me on, on the rock tip, Big Business controls them all.
