Blowback – Morning Wood
By Kevin McHugh
Self-Released?
Hallelujah! No sooner do I decry the lack of a proper release for Blowback’s ‘Morning Wood’ back in January, than I receive ANOTHER package from Sweden, chock full of Blowback’s wonderful album, but this time given a PROPER release.
At least it LOOKS like a proper release. It’s got a spanky, stoner-riffic bright red and yellow cover with all the trimmings, bright as an op-art traffic light. But to tell you the truth, I can’t tell if this is self-released, or released through the kind auspices of Sweden’s Recordheaven music store, or just what. In any case, it looks like you need to buy the CD from Recordheaven, and they’re easy to find on the net.
In case illicit substance abuse has dulled your memory (unlikely, I’ll grant you….), here’s my review from a few months back, just to remind you of why you should get with Recordheaven, now that Blowback’s album is easily available:
BlowBack - Morning Wood
(Self-Released)

BlowBack characterizes themselves as a “70s rock
band,” and that pretty much hits the mark. But that’s
not the whole picture, ‘cause no 70s rock band ever
had thick and delicious fuzz quite like this, the kind
you’d like to pour over a big bowl of mota to achieve
the maximum desired effect.
If you love the 70s hard rock underground, the kind
that went off the air about 1972, then you’ll love
BlowBack. They mix early Sabbath with a time traveling
70s FM aesthetic, inject it with a dose ‘o the desert,
and voila! Crunchy, melodic heaviness like Big
Witchcraft on a date with Little Dozer, know what I
mean? They’ve got their own take on Swedish desert
heaviness, and it kicks all kinda butt while fitting
comfortably with other modern – dare I use the term? –
stoner masters, naming no names.
The sound is not quite as “big” as BlowBack’s
estimable split with Asteroid. This go ‘round they’ve
emphasized the midrange, where the guitars and vocals
live, invoking the Garage Gods for extra wattage, yet
sacrificing none of the heaviness, groove, melody and
harmony. And make no mistake about it; they’ve got the
songs as well. It’s unjust that these guys should be
releasing this themselves, so some label with a
musical and aesthetic IQ over 100 needs to step up and
help these brothers get the word out. It’s the Right
thing to do!
