My Sleeping Karma – My Sleeping Karma (Elektrohasch Records)
By Kevin McHugh

January 17, 2007

My Sleeping Karma is all about using psychedelic instrumental music to reach deep into your subconscious to tap into a galaxy of dreams and visions, setting your emotions free. In this they are not unlike the German masters of lysergic music from the 70s, namely early Ashra ('Blackouts,' 'New Age of Earth'), "Uncle" Klaus Schulze, and of course T. Dream. Nevermind the new age wallpaper you hear these days; they were the real deal back then. Combine that with some organic, groovoid desert heaviness and you've got a ready-made journey into inner space.

This'll be a warm, feelgood journey. No death and night and blood for these tripsters! 'Intention' opens the album, serving as a microcosm of the record's smooth sound, replete with trancey, repeating guitar phrases. So close your eyes and let your third eye open, brothers and sisters, 'cause the alien visions will be coming thick and fast. Just as you're starting to settle in, '23 Enigma' lulls you with a quiet beginning, then rattles your cage with some pounding desert riffage. There's some great bass to be heard in the hypnotic, jazzy 'Glow,' and 'drannel Xu llop' (don't ask), will lay you back with a fine, simple descending riff of absorbing beauty.

This is desert hallucinatory instrumental rock for navel gazers. It's got groove galore and visions to spare, hearkening back to the more cerebral, lysergic Krautrockers of yore even as it hits you over the head with heavy desert rhythms. The Elektrohasch label boasts that it's got "the world's finest heavy psychedelia," and that's no idle brag. Score!
