The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown!

One of my first EVER 7 inch, 45 rpm singles was "Fire" b/w "Rest Cure" by THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN. Man! As soon as I heard that intro: "I am the god of hell-fire, and I bring you..." I was HOOKED! I begged my cousin to give me the record (which she did) and I must have spun that thing literally hundreds of times when I was 7 years old on my old monaural record player (a neat little package decorated red and white checkers that clasped together in a handy dandy little carrying case - that thing saw me through the KISS years from 1976 to 1979 as well!)

But I digress...

I never heard the entire debut album those two songs came from until probably a good 15 years after that but it too delivered the goods!

Now, some 30 years later, I am spinning the CD (complete with 5 original mono mixes) over and over and loving it just as much as, if not more than, the first time I heard it. Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer (who went on to form ATOMIC ROOSTER after this first outing with Arthur) are just as stellar musically as Arthur is vocally, and the overall vibe of this album is just too good to be believed!

So, in similar "better late than never" fashion with this music that I literally grew up with (me and the debut were both born in 1968) I am finally venturing out into Arthur's other material with KINGDOM COME and as a solo artist. I've also heard that two other albums, Strangelands and Jam were recorded with the original CRAZY WORLD lineup before it imploded.

So, that being said, any other ARTHUR BROWN fans here? Sound off!

here's an opportunity to tell my arthur brown story!
about 5 years ago i was talking with my friend about arthur brown and it transpired that i'd never heard the first LP. we thought this was a glaring ommision so he taped me it and gave it to me a few days later.
it was actually the day before i was going on holiday, and i had to get up at 4am or something like that. i put on the tape while i was getting ready and listened to the first few tracks, and then it was time to go. the last bit i remember listening to was in the third song or so it's going "you're gonna die!" and remarked to my girlfriend how cool it was.
we had to change flights in schipphol airport in amsterdam. if you've not been there it is the biggest building i've ever been in. it has 5 "spokes" around a central hub, each of which is the size of most airports. my gilrfriend wanted to buy a new memory stick for her camera so we went to look for a shop. we probably walked a mile or so. we got to the duty free shop and headed over to the electrical section. i heard music. you guessed it... arthur brown. not just that though, it was the second half of that song! no jokes... it happened. i felt really strange for a few days, almost blissful, then it faded away. one of the biggest coincidences i've ever experienced. OR WAS IT?

anyway, i'm also really into "journey" by kingdom come, with the early drum machine. saw arthur brown play about 15 years ago now. i'd only ever heard Fire. happened to be walking past Nice n' Sleazies in Glasgow and saw he was playing. he was brilliant, was really impressed. was also super-impressed by the support band whose name i never got and it was their last gig. the singer was a bit like capt beefheart and the guitarist was a mod type guy. just in case anyone knows who they were (doubtful).
there you go...:-@

Arthur rules. 'Galactic Zoo Dossier' and 'Journey' by AB's Kingdom Come rule as well. Must haves, must hears.

Has anyone seen the film footage from the first Glastonbury Fayre concert, back in '71? For some reason Arthur doesn't appear on the album, but there's rare footage of him performing 'Galactic Zoo' stuff if you can find the film document from the Fayre.

Also, check out Robert Calvert's 'Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters' for a great performance on 'The Gremlin.' I believe he also worked with Klaus Schulze ca. 1980.

Word has it he formed a painting company (!) in Austin, Texas (!), with Jimmy Carl Black of the Mothers of Invention(!) 'Twas called something like Black and Brown. Maybe just a rumor on that one.

Living in America, I'm afraid I'll die without ever seeing him. He was supposed to have toured with Hawkwind a year or two ago.

I don't know about a painting company, but he did do an album with JCB called Brown, Black & Blue.

Arthur Brown is just a blast to listen to..Vince Crane's organ work is fantastic as well as the haunting vocals. I wish we still had more bands playing inspired like that...

Now that's just not true. "Fire" is on the debut of CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN which came out in 1968. I think you are mixing up your bands. CRAZY WORLD was prior to the ARTHUR BROWN solo stuff. In fact, I believe Arthur formed KINGDOM COME after the demise of CWOAB and before he started using his own name exclusively (although I believe he resurrected the CWOAB name for some later releases). In any case, "Fire" is definitely by CWOAB. Just search the internet, you'll see.

I just found the CWOAB at a record show for $7 and it looked to be in nice shape....turns out the record has an irreparable skip in "I Put A Spell On You" - needless to say I was both bummed and pissed cause I had no way of returning the record. So.... I just bought it on ebay for $12 on CD.

Anyway.... I digress... this was my first listen to the CWOAB all the way through and I am much impressed. Arthur's vocals, to me, seem to predate the high pitched metal scream by a couple of years.
