Darediablo - Twenty Paces (Southern Records)

This is really good. I mean REALLY good.
For those that haven’t been hipped to the Darediablo magic, it’s three guys from New York with a stunning amount of musical chemistry – Jake Garcia on guitar/bass; Matt Holford on keys and Chad Royce on tubs. No vocals. In fact, vocals would ruin Darediablo. They’ve reached a level of instrumental competence where any additional tweak would crumble the magic like a house of cards.
I see Darediablo as the great rock ‘n’ roll unifier – where headbangers, jam-heads, hardcore kiddies and prog snobs can all slap backs and drop jaws in mutual admiration of a tremendous talent. It’d be tough to not like them despite any hard-driven personal proclivities.
I’ve been a big Darediablo fan since 2002’s self-released
Bedtime Stories and I can tell you that
Twenty Paces is every bit as good as that first classic release. Not to say that ‘03’s
Feeding Frenzy was bad, but you know what they say about your first love. Actually I take that back. My first love sucked. Not literally either.
It’s hard to put the Darediablo sound into words – it’s more of a feeling that induces a weird music-induced aphasia. They borrow a bit from everything and weave it into a broad cloth that has something for everyone. Garcia treats both the bass-lines and guitar like a pro, an equal balance of technique and feel. I’m a huge fan of both the Rhodes Piano and Hammond B-3 and Matt Holford is the master of the keys… subtle here, driving there… a true maestro. Chad’s drum work is exceptional, a cornucopia of creative beats, fills and overall true mastery of the instrument. Put ‘em together and …. Whoa.
Twenty Paces will definitely be on a whole lotta top ten releases for ’05. Including mine.
