Iggy & the Stooges

It blows my mind when I listen to the first 2 Stooges records that they were made in 1969,1970. Sabbath was more evil and heavier, but no one was more fucking pissed off in 1969 than Iggy Pop. People often credit these as the first 2 punk rock albums but I think they are HARDER than anyone else at that point and are due their recognition in the metal arena. At age 20, no one summed up the non-hippie generation in the USA better. And no one did more drugs!

Their first album might be tied with MC5's Kick out the Jams, but Fun House blew the hell out of Back in the USA or High Time.

Funhouse is on my alltime best list, for sure! I was listening to Raw Power last night, and that's almost as good, if totally different. Too bad they weren't able to do one more album between Funhouse and Raw Power - I'd have liked to have heard another one with Ron Asheton on guitar.

What do you guys think of the reunion?

Just seen a show in France and honestly, I never expected it to be that great. They just played through the s/t and Funhouse. And well...two of the tracks off that recent Iggy solo album, where there's a couple of tracks with the Ashetons on it...not too convincing, though. But as for the rest of the show, wow, the Ashetons still can deliver and Mike Watt is a good stand in on bass, and Iggy, well, he is Iggy...I was surprised of the sheer energy of it all.

I don't like the reunion. Well, it isn't as worse as the MC3 or New York Dolls reunion, but for me it makes no sense. Scott Asheton had lost a lot of his power, and although Mike Watt is still an excellent bass-player (remember Minutemen/Firehose/Dos) and Ron Asheton had a special guitar-tone, it's like Iggy Pop with a new backin band. And Iggy Pop is doing his typical show.... he's always doing the same. I liked his performance in the old Stooges days and in the early 80's, but today he's a lame copy of himself.

The Stooges were a very special band in the late 60's, and it's not possible to transport their very special sound and energy into this century. It's over.......

Well, I'm too young to know. But I've never seen Iggy live, cos I wasn't too interested in his 80ies/90ies solo stuff. And I've heard that critique that Iggy is just copying himself...but I was impressed anyway, cos they seemed to have quite some fun and it sounded raw and the PA was fucking loud. Of course I didn't expect anything new or so...but considering these guys (well not Mike Watt) are nearly 60 years old, I was quite impressed.

Oh yeah, I understand your point. Yeah, Iggy has more still energy than most of the so-called retro rock'n'roll bands nowadays. And he's still authentic.

Shades & Cry for Love were good songs-the video for Shades was filmed at an Indoor Cricket centre across the road from where I lived-which is funny because David Bowie sang backing vocals on that song -and the only video I ever saw being made in person was Bowie's one for Let's Dance of which segments were shot in Sydney.
