UFO - Sharks (Shrapnel Records)
by Darryl Baysinger
February 17, 2003

On the latest effort from UFO called Sharks, we find the team of Mogg, Schenker and Way once again joined by Aynsley Dunbar on drums. I don't know what happened to drummer Andy Parker or keyboardist/rythm guitarist Paul Raymond. Neither were present on the studio disk of 2000's Covenant, so your guess is as good as mine. Sharks goes to prove that they sound just fine without them. When vocalist Phil Mogg sings part of the chorus of Outlaw Man that goes; "I'm a rocker", "I'm a rocker"," I'm a rolling stone", you believe him.

The songwriting of Sharks is a little stronger than on Covenant, but don't get me wrong, I like Covenant just fine and still play it quite a bit. But here the memorable, sing along lyrics of Phil Mogg shine through, and his voice doesn't have that strained sound as it did in Covenant. Also the catchy heavy riffs and excellent technical solos of Michael Schenker are evident here. They were good on Covenant, but much better here. They sound as if they have been strengthened up quit a bit. Pete Way shows he can still keep up with Michael Schenker in the music writing department. He also show he can still play a mean bass. The skin pounding of Aynsley Dunbar shows he doesn't miss a beat. Also there are a few keyboards, played Kevin Carlson. There is also a few harmonized background vocals. The styles here are hard rock, metal, rock and roll and the blues boogie. I guess what they used to call Euro-metal. Similiar artists? UFO of course!

Phil Mogg - vocals

This a great album from UFO. One that I highly recommend. There is not a bad song here. The picture of the Great White shark on the cover says it all. If you are a fan of UFO, you will want to listen to this. There is a website for Shrapnel Records but I didn't include a link here as it has not been updated for a year. Everybody email Chris if you can't find it. Maybe he would stock it.
