Cathedral - Endtyme (Earache Records)
by Daniel Hodgson
July 2001

After dabbling with upbeat doom rock for the past three records, Cathedral have returned with an album that harkens back to the days of The Ethereal Mirror and Forest of Equilibrium.

Endtyme sees the legendary British doom outfit all but abandon their more...um, whacky elements found on Carnival Bizarre, Supernatural Birth Machine and Caravan Beyond Redemption and opt for a more straightforward approach.

The brief instrumental Cathedral Flames sets the tone with its crushing riffs and plodding tempo. Melancholy Emperor simply rips your head off with it's Goatsnake-like arrangement and excellent vocals by Mr. Dorrian.

Speaking of Lee Dorrian, the loony frontman has put forth his best performance to date. I would almost call some of his vocals, "singing" on this record. Just check out Requiem For The Sun if you need proof.

I should also note that Dorrian steps away from his trademark "Ooooh yeahs" and "C'mons" this time. around. But I must admit, those little adlibs were some of my favorite moments on earlier Cathedral records.

Gaz Jennings, The Riffmaster General, is also in fine form here. Once again he peels off riff after Iommi-inspired riff, while retaining his own individual style. Both Sea Serpent and Alchemist of Sorrows display his knack for writing bluesy, yet heavy as hell riffs.

Production-wise, this is my favorite Cathedral album to date. Billy Anderson does an excellent job at letting all the instruments breath and, unlike past work he has done, the vocals arenŐt buried in the mix.

Endtyme is sure to win back some of the fans they lost during their more experimental albums. While I have been fan of all of their work, it's nice to see the boys cranking out the old-school doom once again. Might I add, Huggybear, Oh Yeah!
