Backbiter/Elope split CD (Man's Ruin)
by Chris Barnes
July 2001

Now THIS is what I'M talking about....THIS is some good listening. Los Angeles's Backbiter features some of the current members of the Angry Samoans, Clawhammer and the Mike Watt Band and past playahs in the Porno Sponges and you would never know it listening to them. Elope, well I don't know much about 'em except that it boasts a couple of members of Stoner-Swedes Lowrider. That, and they rule the universe.

Backbiter can only be described as the Hammond B3 lovin' child of Led Zep/Humble Pie. When the songs don't groove, they boogie. In fact, guitarist and vocalist Jonathan Hall sometimes sounds so much like Steve Marriot of Humble Pie fame, I did a doubletake... erm.. doublehear... whatever, you get the picture. Great band, great sounds....I play this one on a consistent basis. Nice to hear something with attention paid to dynamics and not based solely on volume and distortion. I gotta see these guys live...

Elope is so galldammed mid-period Lennon/McCartney it's amazing...right down to the vocal harmonies and song arrangements. This band is truly a find and I hope to the Gods that this isn't just a one off. Any fan of the Beatles won't be disappointed and even if you hate the Beatles (whatsthematterwithyou?!) your still gonna dig it because there isn't anything out there like this in the current underground scene.

I can't recommend this one enough.... 10 out of 10.
