Reverend Bizarre / Orodruin - Split 12" (Hellride Music Records)

Wow! I just got through round two with the test pressing of this upcoming Doom Metal monster that serves as Hellride's debut offering. This is so doom that I don't know of adjectives weighty enough to suffice. The sound quality is very, very good and I for one welcome hearing well done doom with the warmth of that vinyl sound.

Reverend Bizarre's side is a single 15 minute plus doom opus that fondly recalls Vitus' s doomier moments but retains an individuality all it's own. the RB boys know one of the secrets of true heavy doom.....namely it's not all the guitar (though the ones here are a true slicing crushing weapon of doom) . The bass is crucial to the heaviness of it all and definitely shoulders it's share of the thunder here. The drums anchor it all solidly and it's finished off with a large helping of mournful vocals that very effectively carry the melancholy that is the primary emotion of this song while leaving no doubt that anger and hate are the emotional right and left hand men.

Orodruin's two offerings continue to bolster their reputation as one of the best newcomers in the Doom Metal genre. The sound here is classic old school doom with a great sense of dynamics. The guitar tone here (as on their debut album) is just gorgeous from a doom perspective. The riffs slay and while maintaining that old school doom feel, never give you the feeling you've heard it before. The vocals and rhythm section slot in perfectly presenting as a tight cohesive unit. The sound has more open spaces that the densely packed wall of sound of their debut, but rather than subtracting from the power it simply highlights the individual components. The chamber of doom power is still there just in starker relief and clarity.

If you have the slightest love of doom, you cannot go without this. Don't look for an URL at the bottom, just click on the store icon above and buy, that or drag your sorry trendy poser ass back over to Limp Bizket's site. CDT forever!
