Raging Speedhorn - How The Great Have Fallen
Raging Speedhorn - How The Great Have Fallen (SPV/Steamhammer)

A couple of things I can tell you right off about Raging Speedhorn and their latest, How The Great Have Fallen. First, it swings, rocks and rages better than anything I’ve heard since that Helvis with the badass cover. Second, I can safely say that as ugly as I am, I’m still better looking than any current member of Raging Speedhorn. That makes me feel somewhat better than I felt 10 minutes before staring at the band bio pic.
The Speedhorns excel at combining stoner groove, sludge riffs and hardcore-meets-classic rock aesthetic to a caustic brew that recalls the aforementioned Helvis, Eyehategod, Iron Monkey with a bit of Kyuss-ish flourish. It’s tough to find groove these days in a mix that’s so friggin’ filthy. You’d expect a lot of screaming and aggressive tempos (which you do get here) but you wouldn’t necessarily expect that “swing” that makes tunes like “A Different Shade of Shit”, “How Much Can A Man Take” and the title track such catalysts to involuntary booty shakes. Then there’s the tracks that are absolutely HEAVY F’N METAL, like the last minute of “Master of Disaster” (man that aggro breakdown after that groovy riff gets me every time), “Fuck You! Pay Me!” (one of the greatest titles ever with a very cool ultra-slow sludge-riff breakdown) and “Slay the Coward”. Then there the phony phone call that is worth waiting for at the end of “Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down”. “Yeah, lemme come down ‘dere an play some leeeeds for yo’ metah band”. Classic.
All in all, a real monster of a record – a helluva satisfying collection of Heaviness that should appeal to the stoned, the metal, the hawwwdcore and the sludgeologists out there. Nice work.
