Interviews
Hellride
Music: So
Thulsa Doom formed as an underground rock "Super Group"...explain
how that occurred. Ole
Andreassen:
I had been working in my studio,Caliban Studios, for years when I decided
to form Thulsa Doom. Having worked with the majority of the Oslo underground,
I had a pretty good idea of who I wanted and who I didnt want in my band,
and the guys on the top of my list luckily agreed to join me. They are
all excellent, both as musicians and on a personal level. I started out
wanting this band to be better than the rest. There are too many crap and
mediocre bands around who are never going anywhere. And so far,in my opinion,
Thulsa Doom has accomplished my goals. Ole
Andreassen: Well it`s all the Doomsters of course. My self,El
Doom on guitar, Papa Doom:vocals, Doom Perignon:guitar, Angelov Doom:bass,
Fast Winston Doom:drums. Ole
Andreassen: Recording went pretty quick. Since I have access
to my own studio and produce everything myself, it`s just a question of
will. On this one,I did the tunes and Papa did the lyrics. On our new
album "The Seats Are Soft But The Helmet Is Way Too Tight",
Papa wrote a couple of tracks, and Perignon did one. Glad you liked the
cover. Not everybody in the band was happy about it, one thing being that
it was released in June last year, and the joke was getting pretty thin.
I like it a lot, and abroad the reactions have been only positive. Ole Andreassen: Both songs were old riffs I had laying around for years. I`m very happy with the way "Birthday Pony" turned out. The whole piano and feedback part on the midsection I stole from the track "Ramble Tamble" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Creeedence has always been a big influence on me, not the boring sing a long songs like "Down on the Corner","Cotton Fields","Proud Mary" etc,but the really heavy shit like "Born on The Bayou"and "Ramble Tamble". "Born on the Bayou" is my all time favourite song.If you really listen to it,you will understand what "heavy" actually means. Papa,of course, wrote the lyrics for "Birthday Pony" and "Fatboys Head". Here he is: Papa
Doom: Thank you Ol'. Every word
on every song by Th' Doom are written during our rehearsals at Caliban,
so the themes are all inspired by the riffs and the mood of the day. I
really think the lyrics explains themselves, if you didn't get it, listen
again. On the new album you'll find more songs about fucking and food-poisoning,
a little narcissism and a little too much violence, as well as my favourite
drug song. Ole
Andreassen: The new album is more varied than the EP."Sins
of the Next Man" and "Birthday Pony" is on it + eight new
tracks. It`s not all "stoner-rock" or whatever you call it, we
try to be varied an somehow original with our composing. The Ep reviews
has picked up on that originality and I`m pleased that they notice it.
Everyone can tune down to C and play some cool riffs, but the masters is
already out there (Kyuss,Fu`etc.).Therefore I think it`s important to
stretch the limits about what is "acceptable" within the formula.
We are already rehearsing new songs and there is some really weird stuff
in the making. Ole
Andreassen: Whenever Mayhem record something at my place, they
pay me in cannabis. Ole
Andreassen: Yes the scene is great. The best bands around now
are Black Debbath,The Cumshots, Brut Boogaloo, Rumboid, Cadillac,The Ricochets
and Gluecifer. I have recorded a lot over the years. Now I`m pretty busy
with my own stuff,so I dont do that much outside my own bands. The bands
I did that you may have heard of are Mayhem, Black Debbath, Gluecifer,
Hellride, The Wonderfools, Mensen,The Barbarellas, Schweinhund and the
Retardos. Me and Angelov both play in Black Debbath. Black Debbath are
big rockstars over here and we won the Norwegian Grammy for best hard
rock album last year in competition with Dimmu Borgir and The Kovenant. Ole
Andreassen: We are touring a bit in Norway now,and are going
to Spain in May.We got invited there to play at Bilbaos Open Rock`n`Roll
World Championship. We are the Norwegian team.Hope to come over to the
U.S. soon and play together with some other bands on Devil Doll Records. Hellride Music: Any last words to the fans? Ole Andreassen: Buy the album. Give us a fair listen. Support the band. Papa Doom: Dont eat stuff off the pavement.
