Reviews    Tremble Saith Thy Master - A Stand of Faith in Despair's Darkest Moment (Self-Release)
by Chris Barnes

Doom metal is becoming the punk rock of the '00's right down to the bedroom productions and the DIY booklets, T-shirts and websites. Being a lover of the genre, I couldn't be more delighted that people are finding artistic expression within the doom genre as a hobby. Entire albums are being composed and put together with the help of some musical talent, a drum machine and a computer. It's about as underground as you can get, and truth be told, there is some damn good stuff floating around out there.

Tremble Saith Thy Master is the work of "Uncle" Dan Rowe, the webmaster of the underground doom/rock site Uncle Dan's House of Smut and resident music DIY'r.Composed entirely by himself in what he describes as an extremely difficult year personally, one could surmise that A Stand of Faith in Despair's Darkest Moment is at least somewhat of a cathartic work.

Using the old school bands such as Saint Vitus, Pentagram and Black Sabbath as well as utilizing the "Hell no we won't solo" ethic of Hellhammer, A Stand of Faith.. is an interesting listen. Dan has a knack for the no-nonsense doom riff, that sounds so down-tuned that the strings must hang on the fretboard like wet strands of linguini. Grant it, I've never been a huge fan of drum machines, but at least Dan knows how to program better than most, adding some cool fills and cymbal action vs the predictable preprogrammed fair. The biggest drawback to an otherwise well done recording is that Dan's voice has an echo effect on it... probably not a big deal to most of us, and really not all that big a deal to me, except it reminds me of the Tidy Bowl man... you know, big tank, little man, big echo. But that's my burden to deal with. Probably has to do with some blocked-out mental trauma in my childhood....

Anyway, a solid bedroom produced doom effort. Keep 'em comin', Dan...
