Interviews    Supersonic Death Machine
by Chris Barnes

Supersonic Death Machine specializes in the type of heavy metal that speaks purely in it's violent force... no image, no B.S., just visceral punch, like "Hellhammer interpreted by Bongzilla on the Entombed tip". I was so enthused about their new Unite demo, that I asked the guys to do an interview. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than foisting upon the masses music I like. And you will like it. Hellride talks with Tim, Travis and Dusty about Supersonic Death Machine.

Hellride Music: Fellas, I appreciate you taking the time out to answer these questions... take inside the collective mindset of Supersonic Death Machine. Tim, I know you were in Burnout, what about Travis and Dusty? How'd you guys meet?

Tim: I knew Travis from back in the 90’s when he played in the band BRICK and I played in the band GROSS MOTOR. Our bands played together several times.

Travis: Dusty and I had jammed together several times after I left my last band, LANDFILL.

Hellride Music: The Unite demo has the capacity to blow out windows and change molecular structures just based on compressed sound frequencies. That fucker is heavy. I described it as "Hellhammer interpreted by Bongzilla on the Entombed tip". Really, I have no idea what that means, but it sounded accurate at the time. In retrospect, I do hear the Obituary influence too. I trust my gut. Really, how did you guys go about deciding on your sound? Or did it just happen? What, exactly IS your sound using your own definition?

Tim: I wanted to do something different from BURNOUT… something darker and heavier combined with my 80’s thrash influences.

Travis: We like the tones and the feel of what’s going on in today’s rawk scene…thicker is better.

Dusty: I enjoy the heaviness of the music plus with this band I also get to use a lot of different styles of grooves and beats.

Hellride Music: If you had to name ONE big influence for all three of you guys in regards to Supersonic Death Machine, who would it be?

Dusty: Anything that shakes the fillings out of your teeth!

Hellride Music: Tell me about the first track... it starts off slow, and then you hear Dusty signaling the upcoming time change on the cymbals.... then all hell breaks loose. Great song. Lyrically what are we talking about here? Is there a common lyrical theme that runs through the demo?

Travis:“Unite” was inspired by the loss of my job at Maytag because they were moving one of their factories out of the country. As far as the rest of the songs… everything is about the human struggle in general, be it political or personal.

Hellride Music: I see. Do you guys have a lot of groupies in Peoria? Lot's of innocuous sex in the back of limos?

Tim: The only “innocuous” we want to have is with people who let us do interviews for their magazines!

Hellride Music: I don't know how to take that. You guys are all great musicians, but there is one thing that really sticks out after repeated listenings. I like the way Travis is doing his own thing when it comes to the bass, not just following the guitar and/or percussion. Very 'arry like, in a sense. How do you approach the bass and has your sound always been this heavy duty?

Travis: My sound comes from using SUNN amps. I’ve always preferred a thick, bass tone as compared to the wimpy-assed tones you hear in today’s Nu-Metal. I try to fill the void that some 3 piece bands sometimes have.

Hellride Music: Same question for Tim. Supersonic Death Machine is much different than your previous band in terms of style and sound. What are you getting out of Supersonic Death Machine that you weren't getting out of Burnout in terms of musical output?

Tim: SDM is a darker place for me musically. BURNOUT was and still is a great band. In this band I get to use my early influences like Celtic Frost, Venom, old Metallica, Slayer, Nasty Savage, Motorhead, Hallows Eve, Destruction, Kreator, etc… There’s nothing better than a heavy evil dark riff!

Hellride Music: Tell us about the live music scene in Peoria - what's big, what's not, where are all the good places to hear heavy stuff and .... shit... IS there a heavy music scene in Peoria??

Tim: The scene in Peoria is great. Peoria is a metal town. Be it hardcore, death metal or whatever…. This town has your flavor. There are some great bands here like Of Parting Words, Lividity, Burning Love Letters, Minsk, Metal Warriors and more.

Hellride Music: I always like to ask what people are listening to, so.... what's currently spinning for the members of Supersonic Death Machine?

Dusty: Gov’t Mule, BLS

Travis: Mastodon, Obituary

Tim: Black Dahlia Murder, High on Fire

Hellride Music: Cool choices. What's next for the band?

Travis: Hopefully putting out a couple of 7” records, recording a full length.

Tim: Touring and finding someone to assist us in putting out our full length.

Hellride Music: Thanks again for the words. Anything you'd like to leave us with?

Tim: Go to our website and download our whole CD or contact us and we’ll send you a CD for the price of shipping. Support the RAWK and….
