On Need Another Seven Astronauts, Rebreather redefine aural density, taking mountainous feedback, crushing percussion, searing vocals, odd tunings and combining them with a bit of melody and loose song structures. The end result ranges from the rangy tension and catchy chorus of "Joy Bang", to the all out doom-vibe of "Inaudible" to the 14 minute feedback and percussion workout of the outstanding "Ropeladder/Seedspreader". It's as if sludgecore quit moping long enough to get up off it's ass and go to art school. The production on here is brilliant, transcending the usual claustrophobic and poor production values often associated with sludge. In particular, Jeremy Koerber's drum sound is crisp without losing that all important (to me, anyway) organic touch. Barley Rantilla's vocals are of the Unsane/Cable variety - meaning "yell your ass off until it hurts. Then yell s'more". Rantilla give his throat a rest only for brief moments in "Pushing the Lights". The rest of the time, the kid is full bore. He must have a voice like Jack Klugman on his off days. There is an odd theme running through Rebreather's lyrics that I feel warrants attention. Every single song makes references to respiration in some respect. Even the name of the band reflects the act of taking in and distributing air. Good interview question. For someone anyway.
