Reviews    Truth and Janey - No Rest for the Wicked (Monster Records)
by Chris Barnes

The blemish of disco in the mid- 70's banished many an up and coming young rock band to the cut-out bins in a flurry of severed record contracts. One of the true losses was a trio formed by a young guitarist by the name of Billy Janey. Had they recorded this album a couple of years earlier, the potential was certainly there for Truth and Janey to share the charts with their American peers like Mountain, Blue Oyster Cult, The Edgar Winter Band, Grand Funk Railroad and so on.

Monster Records has taken it upon themselves to re-release a host of obscure 70's hard rock bands in hopes that they may now enjoy the success they were denied. Not only is the music brought to the masses, but the label also does an outstanding job with the packaging, providing booklets loaded with pics, history and lyrics.

While not exactly ground breaking, Truth and Janey had there share of solid, heavy rock songs in the vein of the aforementioned Mountain or the lesser known Cactus and Leafhound. The album cover sticker describes Janey's guitar playing as "savage, nitro-fueled". I wouldn't go that far, I mean that sounds like a marketing-derived description for a Yngwie Malmsteen album or something. Janey fretboard work does sound awesome though, in that good ol' analog way. This album also comes with four bonus tracks, mostly covers. Their version of "Under My Thumb" is pretty horrible, the production sucking any engery that they might have given the song. Still, a very comprehensive look at a band that sadly didn't get the respect it was due.

7.5 out of 10.
