Interviews
Hellride Music: Hey Jeff, how's it going? Jeff Clayton: Pretty good I suppose. Just trying to get back to normal after one of the worst few weeks in our nations history...it's hard though. Hellride Music: Would you fill everyone in on ANTiSEEN's history and who is currently in the band? Jeff: We've been around since 1983, have toured the USA & Europe a few times, Have out more releases than I can remember and we'll keep going 'til we decide otherwise. The band at this time is Joe Young - guitar, Sir Barry Hannibal - drums, Doug Canipe - bass & myself Hellride Music: Your latest release "The Boys from Brutalsville" makes how many releases? Your discography is longer than my rap-sheet... Jeff: Hell man, up around 50 something. Hellride Music: How would you describe ANTiSEEN's sound? Jeff: My new way to describe our sound (and I'll stick with this one for a few years) is PRIMITIVE...like the beginning of time. Hellride Music: What should people expect if they go see ANTiSEEN live? Jeff:
To be entertained....something a lot of groups seem to forget that they
are in the business of...no preaching, maybe a few rants from us Hellride Music: How the hell can you break beer bottles over your head every night? I'm to big of a puss to do that to myself but I've been hit with them before and those bottles are pretty damn thick... What brand do you prefer for smashing into your skull? Jeff:
Glad you brought this one up. I don't actually break them over my head.
That's a story that has been blown up over the years. I HAVE done Hellride Music: You have worked with GG Allin in the past... How did that come about? What kind of person was he? Jeff:
We contacted GG in '87 about coming down to play Charlotte. After he did
we stayed in touch up until his death. He was very professional to Hellride Music: Joe Young (guitarist) is running for city council isn't he? How's that going? Jeff:
Well, he's just got stared with the campaigning for that. Last election
he ran for House of Representatives in his district on the Hellride Music: You have tribute songs to professional wrestlers Sabu ("Sabu") and Terry Funk ("Funk U") so I have to take the only opportunity I might ever have to talk wrestling in an interview to do it. I just want to ask you a few wrestling questions. OK? Jeff: Always ready to talk wrestling. Hellride Music: Favorite wrestler of all time? Jeff:
So I gotta narrow it down to one huh?....Cactus Jack I'd have to say,
but Ric Flair , Abdullah the Butcher, Sabu and Terry Funk are Hellride Music: Favorite match of all time? Jeff:
Damn...these are hard to narrow down. So I'll say a tie between Undertaker
vs Mankind (hell in the cell), Sabu vs Terry Funk (barbed Hellride Music: Favorite current wrestler? Jeff: Triple H Hellride Music: Better technical wrestler in your opinion... Bret Hart, Chris Benoit, or Dean Malenko? Jeff: I became a big Bret Hart fan during his pro Canada heel turn in the WWF.... But I'd have to go with Benoit on this one. Hellride Music: Thanks for doing that, I'm a hardcore wrestling junkie... I just watched CZW's "Un-F'n-believable" today, at the end of the tape they show Jun Kasai take the bandage off his elbow and his damn bone is sticking out... Have you seen the Sandman/Sabu match where Sabu breaks his jaw on the guardrail? If not I'll send you a copy of this "Best of ECW's Bloodiest Matches" tape I have... Jeff:
Man, I have all of Sabu's ECW appearances on tape in some way, shape or
form... I would like to see that CZW stuff though... BIG JAPAN is Hellride Music: Back to music I guess. We'll have to do an all-wrestling interview sometime... What advice would you have for bands that are just starting out? Jeff: Well, if you wanna get rich: ...dont listen to anything I say. Hellride Music: What got you into music? Jeff:
A combination of all the things I grew up loving...horror movies, wrestling,
all of it seemed to go along perfect with a soundtrack of Hellride Music: Where did the band name come from? Jeff:
A clever misspelling of the term anti-scene which we are. We have since
created our own scene, but we dont have to be against that since Hellride Music: What bands influenced ANTiSEEN? Jeff:
The Pistols and Ramones as I mentioned earlier... Motorhead and the Anti-Nowhere
League as for the sound and a little bit of everything we Hellride Music: What CD's have you been listening to lately? Jeff:
Hammerlock "Barefoot & Pregnant", Hellstomper "Haulin'
Ass", Rolling Stones "Some Girls" & "Black and
Blue", The Jam "In The City","All Mod Hellride Music: What bands do you think are the future of underground heavy music? Jeff:
I'm not good at predicting what's gonna break so to speak, but Hammerlock
is one of the most promising new (if ya wanna call em NEW) Hellride Music: You're a Jim Goad fan right? I've been trying to get an interview with him for awhile... How'd you get turned onto him? Jeff:
Joe actually picked up two copies of the suicide issue of ANSWER ME! when
it came out and gave me one.....been a fan ever since. His book Hellride Music: A lot of people I've talked to say you guys are the greatest rock n' roll band in the world... any comment on that? Jeff:
Well, thats quite a compliment... especially in a world that includes
the bands I've mentioned above and many more who came before. I Hellride Music: Anything you'd like to plug? say? whatever? Jeff:
Just wanna say thanks for the interview and to all the ANTiSEEN fans out
there. Be on the look out for our new live album due out in January Hellride Music: I really want to thank you for doing this man. Any final comments? Jeff:
Just like to ask that everyone back our President in these difficult times.
