Reviews    Mictlantecuhtli - Demo 2001 (Self - Release)
by Chris Barnes

I haven't the slightest idea of how to pronounce this band's name. So you aren't the only one staring at it scratching your head.

Mictlantecuhtli play what they call "Aztec - Metal". I don't claim to have a friggin' clue as to what that is, but what I can tell you is that the band absolutely dominate in melding black and traditional heavy metal moments into one huge, musical epic. Reminds me a bit of the last Immortal album in terms of it's approach to song structures.

The vibe I get is if Steve Harris penned black metal tunes (hey, Rob Halford is said to be into that, why not 'arry?!). Indeed, between the inhuman screehes of Cuauhtemoc (no clue, don't ask) and human metronome/drummer Itzcoatl's hyperactive time keeping, you'll find some epic Maiden-like trad metal song structures. This serves to distance Miclantecuhtli away from the hordes of black metal bands bent on comprising entire albums on two riffs and blastbeats...or keyboard runs and blastbeats. Nothing wrong with either of those approaches, but it's nice to hear something different now ans again. The band has also been know to use war drums, flutes and seashells in their music....these are dynamics that I'd like to experience for myself. Sounds intriguing.

Truth be told, two songs isn't a whole lot to get to know a band by. But from the quality that permeates these arrangements, I'd be surprised if we didn't see Mictlantecuhtli on Necropololis or some other quality label in the near future.

Nice work.
