Reviews Jugalbandi
- The View is Better From the Top of the Food Chain (Great Artists 89
Records)

To
fully dig the Jugalbandi sound you have to dig the the concept behind
the music. First you have noted multi-instrumentalist Greg Segal with
a guitar and loads of effect pedals and other doodads. Then you have percussionist
Hyam Sosnow behind a kit Neal Peart would covet. And then, they jam. Some
things totally improvised, some around newly composed riffs or chord structures.
In fact, the band has even taken it upon themselves to develop an "Improvisation
Level Classification System" that rates each piece on the album from
1 to 5. For example IL1 is a totally improvised piece. IL5 is a fully
composed piece. All this alone is incredibly impressive. One aspect of
anything associated with Greg Segal is that it involves a certain amount
of complexity and a whole lotta heart. I mean the man really want's to
educate you about what is behind his music. So if you are a weirdo like
me who likes to sit there and read liner notes and draw juxtapositions
between what is read and what is heard, this is for you.
Most folks
seem to label Jugalbandi as a fusion band. I guess that is true in the
strictest connotation of the term. There is rock here. And there is jazz,
but not "jazz" in the Coltrane sense that most people think
of. If jazz is a conversation between instruments, then that is definitely
what is occurring here. The interplay between Segal and Sosnow is fascinating
to follow. Sometimes they are speaking at the same time, sometimes one
will wander off and the other will bring him back.
Jugalbandi
will appeal to the jazz artist, the space-rock head, even your Mum as
she goes about dusting the living room. This is an ambitious and adventurous
album, but not alienating. It can be enjoyed on many different levels.
