Reviews    Dirty Power- S/T (Dead Teenager Records)
by Chris Barnes

Had San Francisco heavy rock kingpins Dirty Power found each other three years ago, there's no doubt in my mind they would have been the stars of the now-balls-up Frank Kozik vanity label Man's Ruin.

But God bless 'em, new (I mean... to me anyway) Frisco label upstart Dead Teenager has taken the bearded rock lords under their wing. Brainwashed them with Satanic ritual, fed them nothing but raw, hormone-enhanced bull balls and then turned them loose in Jack Endino's Seattle studio. The result is a sonic stew comprised of bits and pieces of AC/DC, pre-pussy era In Through the Night Def Leppard, pre-Dave Wyndorf-becoming-a- total-self-involved dick-era Monster Magnet, Thin Lizzy and MC5 without the White Panther politics.

The production is clean and the guitars are in-your-face in that Jack Endino sort of way. He puts ex-Pansy Division vocalist Patrick Goodwin out of the pocket and right up front. That's mostly a good thing, he's a first class yelper. The only diversion from that truth being the screeching vocals on first track "LSD". When Pat launches into screech mode, I get visions of that guy who was the singer in Cinderella. Ouch.

The beauty of Dirty Power is in the simplicity of the music. Foot-stomping, steering wheel-slapping choruses, loud guitars, big drums. The kind of stuff that made early cock rock so cool before Mutt Lange got ahold of it.

Dirty Power is not gonna change the world, but damn it, It just makes you feel good.
