Reviews    Circle - Sunrise (Ektro Records)
by Chris Barnes

Before listening to Circle's latest, I heard a segment on National Public Radio on how a repetitive riff or beat in music could lead one to a higher state of consciousness. If that's true, then all of us psychonauts should be listening to Circle. Is it Heavymetalfinnishfolkspacekrautrock? Yeah. To me at least. But first and foremost, it's trance-rock.

It's incredible how Circle can explore all those musical styles mentioned above.... namely Heavymetalfinnishfolkspacekrautrock... but still keep it firmly Circle. There's no doubt in my mind that Circle are exploring extremes here.... opener "Nopeuskuningas" and third track "Hautain Takaa" both feature a repetitive vintage NWOBHM riff with vocalist Mikko doing his best Halford (albeit sung in Circle's own nonsense language called "Meronian") and the stoned metal riffage of "Kylän Suurin" will shake walls. Not sure where the hell they came up with that guitar tone, but God bless 'em for doing so. On the softer side of things, second track "Satulinnutfeatures" is an acoustic diddy with weird wind-tunnel effects running through the background and the ultra-hypnotic 15 minute "Lokki" is... well... your gonna have to hear it for yourself. Think Hawkwind running headlong into Can and Fooz.

I'm a big fan of Circle and Jussi Lehtisalo's stoned side project Pharaoh Overlord , so truth be told I think they walk on water. Folks that aren't fans of the epic-length song or think keyboards have no place in rock n' roll, aren't likely to dig this, but those that like music that's as adventuresome as it is trance-inducing, it's a sure fire bet.
