Interviews Burnout

Burnout
is more than just how you are feeling right now. It's heavy
thunder-rock from America's bread basket. IOWA!! They have a new album
out called Thundertits (yeah you read it right) and just got
signed to 12th Planet Records. We talk to Burnout Tim about the controversy
over the new album, the departure of their first singer/bassist and
the addition of two friggin' giants to the Burnout fold....
Hellride
Music: OK
so first the stuff that is kinda boring but everyone is going to want
to know. How did the band come about?
Tim:Well,
I started the band back in January of last year. I had been wanting
to do something of this nature because honestly I am too freakin old
for the nu metal thing plus I just don't relate with their message.
Hellride Music:
So you guys have been around almost two years? And you've already
played with the likes of Electric Wizard and such? That's pretty damn
good I'd say. You aren't into the nu-metal thing? Are you sure it's
the message you object too and not the fashion statement? Are we too
assume you don't wear your pants hanging off your ass?
Tim: I'm
white....I don't have an ass. My daddy didn't beat me, my mommy didn't
try to have sex with me. Had a good childhood. As far as the clothes...
there is no way I could look hip anymore. That is a young mans game.
Hellride
Music:
HAHA!!! Well you come from the heartland of nu-metal, so congrats
on sticking to your guns. Whose currently in Burnout? Is it the same
line-up that created the "Thundertits" album?
Tim:
Unfortunately no. Jeff, the singer/bassist has left the building. We
went out to play Emissions 2 and when we got back, he said he didn't
have has much fun as we did. I was bummed out about that cuz I thought
we would be together for the duration. He has responsibilities at home,
a little girl and wife to take care of. So we understand and he will
always be a brother to this band and remain a great friend.
Hellride
Music: Whoa! Well, I can
see that taking priority but that's still a bummer. He has an awesome
voice and it's very cool that you guys split on good terms. So whose
taking up the vocal/bass duties?
Tim:
Well we actually had to split up the duties. Coming in on bass is John
Hopkins. He's about 6'5" full of piercings and tattoos and on vocals
is a guy named Mark Shields who is 6'7" and into backyard wrestling!
So now we're a five piece which means I have to go buy a trailer cuz
I can't fit all the equipment and us into the shaggin wagon!
Hellride Music:
Christ....what is it with the mid-west raising giants? It's all that
meat, potatoes and genetically-altered corn, I'm betting. How have the
new guys changed the vibe and sound of the band from before?
Tim:
Well we are working on 2 new songs, one which is called
Drinkin with the Devil and so far everything sounds good. John's
bass tone is very different cuz he's using a Orange head and a Orange
8x10 cabinet. Orange has a completely different tone than does Ampeg.
Mark can handle all the old stuff with Jeff's vocals but the new songs
are gonna be a little different. Mark's vocals are not as gruff, so
we will have to wait and see.
Hellride Music:
Can you give us a hint on what the new Burnout will sound like?
Tim: I will say we will be even louder
live when you see us. The writing of the new music has little more of
the southern flavor but still all the same heaviness and lyrical content.
More groove I would say and less of the punk-like downstroke ala Fu
Manchu. That might sound strange being as that we're in Iowa but my
roots go back to Arkansas and bluegrass music.... thanx dad.
Hellride
Music: OK, this brings me
to my next topic..... Burnout's "Thundertits" gets regular
rotation at the Hellride Music Offices (OK my desk and computer in the
spare bedroom). I dig it, because it's pure RAWK. No pretension. I hear
you've come under a bit of fire both for the lyrics on the album and
the title... fill us in.
Tim:
Yeah we have a little bit. I am not a person to retaliate but I do want
to set the record straight. We are a whiskey drinkin, girl chasin heavy
as hell RAWK n ROLL band. We are a party band. We do not wish to try
to change the world through our lyrics. Our songs are all about real
people we know. Tongue n cheek kinda stuff.
Hellride
Music: What exactly was the
controversy about and where and when did this take place? Have you placed
a hit on anyone?
Tim: Well..... the song Mudslinger
is about anal sex. Dirty Man is about a guy that was doing 3
three girls a day.... and not even washing his dick in between visits!
Bangzilla is about a girl who is a sweetheart sober and evil
when she drinks. We got a couple reviews that said we were shallow.
Well as people we're not.... but lyrically we just wanna have a lot
of fun and be dirty. No hits at this time but I know this guy named
Guido......
Hellride Music:
Heheheh.... I guess I never listened that closely to the lyrics.
I mean if Tool can compose a whole song about fist-fucking why can'
t you write a song about a dude that does three chicks a day? Anyway....
What's next for the band? Tour or recording plans?
Tim: We are gonna be doing some shows.
We might be touring with Sea of Green for a couple of weeks in September.
In October we are going to Dallas to play SHOD 3. We play Friday night
October 5th at 10:10pm. We might be playing a few shows with The Glasspack
too. As for recording.....
next March we will go into the studio to release our second CD. I hate
saying CD. Album. Ahhhh much better.
Hellride Music: I have to say it's good
to hear that you a pushing the band strong. There are A LOT of bands
that half-ass it out there and it's become the rarity to see someone
push a band hard to make it. OK enough kissing your ass. A couple of
final questions... What are you listening too and please give us your
unexpurgated views on the current underground rock scene....
Tim: What am I listening to at this
very moment or what i am into at the moment?
Hellride Music: Well...both....
Tim: well I am listening to the bugs
and frogs outside at this moment. As for what I have been listening
to... I love the Throttlerod CD. Great rock n roll. Also I have been
playing the new Operator Generator CD. As far as the current stoner(
oh my god I said it) rock scene.... there are more bands and more labels
popping up so I think it won't be very much longer till we rule the
world! HAHAHA.... <evil laughter>
Hellride Music: OK so... are you
guys signed now or what?
Tim:
Yes we are!!!! We just signed with 12th Planet Music. They are based
out of Toronto, Canada.
Hellride
Music: Anything else you'd like to say to the readers
of Hellride Music and Burnout fans?
Tim: Come see us play when we come
to your town and help support the scene and remember..... don't be silly,
wrap that willy!!!!!
